I am the first person to profess my gratitude to the pharmaceutical industry for their efforts and their solutions. Thanks to modern medicine, I didn’t have to have two open-heart surgeries to correct a rhythm problem in my heart. I have a few medicines that I can take to keep myself out of the hospital or from fainting when I’m behind the wheel. I’m not talking about some of the great things modern medicine and petrochemicals have done to keep us alive, healthy and well.
I’m talking about the over-reliance on petrochemicals for everything we do. It’s in everything we use. Our foods are more processed, our cleaning supplies are all full of toxic, unsafe chemicals, and our hygiene products are full of petrochemicals. Why? Do we really need this much? Maybe some of it is helpful. But the extent of what we are putting into and onto our bodies and our homes makes me wonder if we are doing more harm than good at this point.
I originally founded Ecofills as a refill shop- because I was inspired by the concept and how great I felt by actually doing something good for the world I live in... The empowerment I felt by not consuming- like I was somehow protesting something and taking back some control. Then I learned about recycling being this giant scam (read my other blog), and was even more motivated to make a dent. Something happened while I was sourcing products- I saw the giant discrepancy in the ingredients between mass-produced (and even greenwashed) brands and the smaller companies with natural offerings. Why was it this way, and why were there so many chemicals in soap? My soap that I’ve been using for almost my whole life!
Is it healthy? I have no idea, and I doubt we will ever know. It’s not like anyone there wants to admit that they are poisoning us if they are.
Are we better off with natural soaps and products? Probably, although how do you go about proving it? And is it even reasonable to completely reject every single thing we use because it’s synthetic? I don’t think so. But I do think that over time, the things we use the most should be high quality and closest to nature if possible.
